Overview

PreviousEntering/Leaving the CTRNextProcedural Approach Service

Last updated 1 year ago

This site is for SIMULATION USE ONLY.

Akureyri's arrival procedures are substantially different from all of Iceland's other controlled airports. At Akureyri, Tower provides a for the CTR and TMA, practically acting as an Approach controller.

Permission is required from Tower before entering the CTR or TMA.

If you are unfamiliar with Procedural Approach Services, .

Adhere strictly to departure, arrival and approach procedures and clearances due to high terrain in the vacinity of Akureyri.

Perfoming any 'DIRECT TOs' below 6,000ft will likely result in you crashing into a mountain if you are not perfoming an authorised procedure!

Oceanic Procedures

The Reykjavik CTA is oceanic airspace, so oceanic clearance is required when operating within it.

Oceanic clearance is required:

  • above FL245 in Iceland,

  • above FL285 in Greenland,

  • above 7,500ft in the Faroe Islands, or

  • when leaving the Iceland, Greenland, or Faroe Islands domestic areas.

When requesting your IFR clearance, provide your requested mach number. Readback the full oceanic clearance, including the mach number and routing.

EZY6941: EZY6941, request clearance to Edinburgh, mach .78, information K.

BIAR_TWR: EZY6941, oceanic clearance to Edinburgh, MAMEP1A departure, RATSU BARKU, climb via the SID initially FL290, mach .78, squawk 2635.

EZY6941: Cleared to Edinburgh, MAMEP1A then RATSU BARKU, climb via SID initially FL290, mach .78, squawk 2635.

BIAR_TWR: Readback correct, info K current, QNH 1002.

EZY6941: QNH 1002, EZY6941.

FLI402: FLI402, request clearance to Vagar, mach .75, information B.

BIAR_TWR: FLI402, oceanic clearance to Vagar with a re-route, MAMEP1A departure, after MAMEP direct LARUX then MY, climb via the SID initially FL290, mach .75, squawk 1233.

FLI402: Cleared to Vagar with a re-route, MAMEP1A then LARUX MY, climb via SID initially FL290, mach .75, squawk 1233.

BIAR_TWR: Readback correct, info B current, QNH 1027.

FLI402: QNH 1027, FLI402.

A mach number is your speed relative to the speed of sound. For example, mach 0.80 relates to 80% of the speed of sound.

Approaches (Non-Standard)

The ILS is slightly offset (to the left for runway 19, and to the right for runway 01). Pilots following the ILS must take control on short final.

The LOC approaches for runway 01 and runway 19 are also offset.

Backtracking

All aircraft can expect to be given a backtrack instruction. If you do not require a backtrack, you may notify Akureyri Tower.

General Aviation

General Aviation usually parks at the hangers.

Startup clearance is only required for aircraft with more than one engine.

Airborne wake separation is not ensured by Tower. Pilots remain fully responsible for maintaining situational awareness and should request a deviation where required. Pilots will be passed traffic information along with wake turbulence warnings where practical.

Expect VFR clearances with Tower at the runway holding point.

Helicopters

Startup clearance is required for helicopters. Helicopters requiring a hover taxi must explicitly request one (for example, "SKN, request hover taxi").

All takeoffs and landings will be performed on the runways unless otherwise advised.

Hovering-on-stand activities require permission from Tower.

Controller Feedback

Aerodrome supervisor. Provides a and controls both the CTR and the TMA. Surveillance radar is used by Tower during certain approaches.

All feedback, good or bad, is appreciated. You can submit feedback .
