Oceanic Procedures

The Reykjavik CTA is oceanic airspace, so oceanic clearance is required when operating within it.

Oceanic clearance is required:

  • above FL245 in Iceland,

  • above FL285 in Greenland,

  • above 7,500ft in the Faroe Islands, or

  • when leaving the Iceland, Greenland, or Faroe Islands domestic areas.

When requesting your IFR clearance, provide your requested mach number. Readback the full oceanic clearance, including the mach number and routing.

EZY6941: EZY6941, request clearance to Edinburgh, mach .78, information K.

BIKF_DEL: EZY6941, oceanic clearance to Edinburgh, OSKUM3C departure, RATSU BARKU, climb via the SID initially FL290, mach .78, squawk 2635.

EZY6941: Cleared to Edinburgh, OSKUM3C then RATSU BARKU, climb via SID initially FL290, mach .78, squawk 2635.

BIKF_DEL: Readback correct, info K current, QNH 1002.

FLI402: FLI402, request clearance to Vagar, mach .75, information B.

BIKF_DEL: FLI402, oceanic clearance to Vagar with a re-route, OSKUM3C departure, after OSKUM direct LARUX then MY, climb via the SID initially FL290, mach .75, squawk 1233.

FLI402: Cleared to Vagar with a re-route, OSKUM3C then LARUX MY, climb via SID initially FL290, mach .75, squawk 1233.

BIKF_DEL: Readback correct, info B current, QNH 1027.

FLI402: QNH 1027, FLI402.

A mach number is your speed relative to the speed of sound. For example, mach 0.80 relates to 80% of the speed of sound.

General Aviation

General Aviation usually parks on the eastern apron.

Startup clearance is only required for aircraft with more than one engine.

Airborne wake separation is not ensured by Tower. Pilots remain fully responsible for maintaining situational awareness and should request a deviation where required. Pilots will be passed traffic information along with wake turbulence warnings where practical.

Expect VFR clearances with Tower at the runway holding point.

Helicopters

Helicopters either park on the eastern apron or stands on taxiway Kilo.

Startup clearance is required for helicopters. Helicopters requiring a hover taxi must explicitly request one (for example, "SKN, request hover taxi").

All takeoffs and landings will be performed on the runways unless otherwise advised.

Hovering-on-stand activities require permission from Ground.

Controller Feedback

All feedback, good or bad, is appreciated. You can submit feedback .
